With an area of 13,648 km², Cerro Largo is one of the largest regions in the country. Its population is around 85,000, with a strong agro-industrial profile.
Its economic base includes sectors such as rice milling, meat processing, dairy, and cured meats, especially in Melo and Río Branco. The manufacturing industry accounts for 8% of local employment, generating approximately 2,900 direct jobs.
This month we were proud to host a press event in Melo to share exciting updates on the construction of our third industrial plant and to officially launch LUMIN Crece, our new employment platform.

This is what the new mill will be like
The new plywood panel mill located in Melo, Cerro Largo department, 12 kilometers south of the city along Route 8, will be a major milestone in Uruguay’s forestry industry. This expansion will allow Lumin to increase its annual production capacity to nearly 500,000 cubic meters, positioning the country as the second-largest plywood producer in Latin America.
Scheduled to begin operations in 2026, this mill will be the most significant industrial investment in the department’s history and a clear example of Lumin’s commitment to sustainable and decentralized development.
The project is part of a growth strategy focused on using raw materials, minimizing environmental impact and adding value to the region. With plantations in the area that began in 2006 and 2007 having now reached maturity, the establishment of an industrial mill in Cerro Largo will transform these resources into high-value products, while also creating genuine job opportunities.
“It makes sense to develop an industrial project that adds value”, explained Lumin’s CEO, Álvaro Molinari, in an interview with Forestal.
The mill will be built near the forests to reduce distances, optimize logistics, and reinforce the sustainability of the entire production process.
